There are three things you need to know about my ex-boss.
  1. He’s the world’s most intolerable bastard. (Seriously. You can ask the Guinness Record people. They’ll back me up.)
  2. He can’t swim. (Which didn’t help when he fell off that yacht and lost his memory.)
  3. He thinks we’re engaged. (Okay, so that last one might be my fault.)
So yeah, I probably didn’t have to keep up the faux-fiancé thing for quite this long, and I definitely didn’t have to invent a whole backstory for us, but after being unceremoniously fired for wanting to see my Gran before she died (talk about kicking a girl when she’s down, right?), he deserved a little payback.
A week or two of free manual labor on the house I inherited? The perfect payback. At least it seemed like a good idea at the time…
Now? Not so much.
Unfortunately, all this pretending is making it impossible to remember how much I hate him. In fact, it’s starting to feel not-so-pretend at all, which is so very problematic.
Because as the old saying goes, it’s all fun and games until your amnesiac fake-fiancé of an ex-boss gets his memory back…

Disastrously failed relationship?
Check.
Crawling back to my hometown to figure my life out?
You bet.
Getting stood up for the first date I’ve been on since I got dumped?
Why not?
As if all that isn’t mortifying enough, Luke Walker saunters in just in time to witness the humiliation.
Childhood best friend, unrequited love, and retired pro baseball pitcher… He’s the one person I was hoping never to run into again.
I came back to Duke Harbor to start fresh, but Luke stars in almost every memory of my past, and if I had a choice, that’s where he’d stay. Instead, I fall head over heels (onto the floor… not in love) and end up in Luke’s arms as he literally sweeps me off my feet. And after an evening spent in the E.R. together, I’ve got a whole new problem.
Luke is dead set on proving we can be friends again.
He wants to make a comeback, but I just want to keep my heart intact.
